College – The felon’s friend
I get out of the joint. No prospects. Very little family to help me. Most guys are topping off their retirement account by now, but me, I’m just starting over from scratch.
Your stereotypical jack of all trades and master of none, I quickly find that most of my skills are off limits to me due to my felonies. Someone suggests college, but a middle-aged man in a room full of bright and energetic twenty somethings is scary as hell to me. But I go for it.
The college experience turned out to be just what I needed. People were friendly and accepting. Since I didn’t have to wear a tag reading “Hi! My name is Ex-Con” nobody knew I was a felon unless I told them or they were extremely nosy and computer savvy. Grants and student loans paid for everything, so I didn’t have to stress over bills.
Maybe you’re the college type and maybe you aren’t, but you never know until you try. Register, apply for a pell grant and a student loan, give it a shot. You can always drop the classes after a few days of attending if you feel it was a mistake. No penalties. No wondering whether you should have gone to college or not. Who knows? You might enjoy it as much as I do!
